Proper Workplace Ergonomics

Improve Workplace Ergonomics to Alleviate Back and Neck Pain

Pain in your back, neck, and shoulders can easily be exacerbated by the way your workstation is set up or how you go about your tasks.  Fortunately, if you can adjust your setup, you can do much to alleviate this problem.  St. Joseph Chiropractic offers the following tips for proper workplace ergonomics to prevent back and neck pain:

Some Causes of Workplace Pain:

•Poor ergonomics are some of the biggest causes of work-related pain.  Improper positioning of computer monitors, keyboards, chairs, and other commonly used furniture or equipment can work against your body's natural movement and positioning.

•Staying in one position for too long causes your muscles and joints to lose their elasticity and "bind up" in uncomfortable ways.  Over time, this discomfort can turn into pain.  It's even worse when the constriction ends up forcing your posture out of proper alignment.

•Poor posture isn't always as obvious as it seems.  Even if you sit and stand straight, lift things from the knees, and take other precautions, you may find yourself in posture-related pain.  Unexpected sources of postural problems include improper furniture and footwear that doesn't allow you to stand relatively flat on the floor.

Preventing Pain

Whenever possible, adjust your work area to get rid of awkward reaching and unsupportive furniture that may not fit you optimally.  Make sure that your desk and chair are the right heights and that they sit squarely.  Put everything you routinely need to reach right in front of you or just slightly off to the side.  Timing is crucial for your joints and muscles so make sure to try and get up, stretch, and move around every 15-30 minutes.  Stretching and keeping your core strength optimal will help with your posture as the day goes on as well.
